Overview

Chef Mama is an interactive nutritional guidance app targeted towards pregnant and post-partum women, encouraging a healthier, balanced apporach to nutrition.

The Problem

  • Being unsure of how to handle food cravings when pregnant
  • Struggling to reach nutritional goals, and not understanding them
  • Being unaware of how to prepare the meals that could help their diet

The Solution

  • Cravings tracker / assistant to guide pregnant women
  • Food tracker that analyses and tracks foods and offers nutrient breakdowns
  • Recipes that are readily available, and can be added and created by users of the app

Key Phases

Process: Project Workflow

01 Discovery

Develop an understanding of the user, identifying problems and pain points. Context and brand should be acknowledged, to ensure brand mission / goals can be achieved.

02 Research

Compiling research to support our understanding and assumptions gathered from discovery. Gathering data by interviewing, focus groups, surveys and usability testing.

03 Ideation

Sketching out wireframes, and drafting out low-fidelity designs. Developing user journeys and flows to support development of design, based on gathered data from steps 1 & 2.

04 Design

Converting low-fidelity designs through to high-fidelity, implementing a brand identity while conducting usability testing throughout.

05 Launch

Evaluate design with stakeholders to obtain feedback and develop the product in the design team.
Continuous flow of feedback is needed to launch the product.

06 Evaluate

Investigate the effectiveness of the outcome, if the solution targets the problem and user satisfaction is met.

Research

Key research findings

To analyse pregnancy cravings and nutrition further, I conducted a google survey. This survey was delivered to pregnant and recently given birth females with the UK.  Key findings are as follows:

Nearly 60% were unaware of the link between deficiencies and cravings

Nearly 60% were likely to use an app for dietary advice

50% did not consume supplements during pregnancy

40% did not eat fruit or vegetables during a normal day

Launch and Evaluate

Prototyping & Solution Testing

As the visual identity and structure of the app was finalised, the functionality of the tool was then tested. As the application was a part of my own personal development, there was no intention of going live. Thus, the application was prototyped within Adobe XD (main design tool used), and limitations of adobe XD for building did not apply - it was sheerly for demonstration.

As prototyping was finalised, an accessible link was shared amongst survey participants (from the inital research phase) and gathered qualitative feedback in the form of written thoughts.  Overall, feedback was positive.

Conclusions

Conclusions

I was satisfied with the overall outcome of this project. I was able to successfully design and demonstrate functionality of an app whilst assessing and reaching user needs, deliverables were met and ran on a smooth project timeline. The application resonates with a niche audience, and I received positive feedback from survey participants, with many comments complimenting the visual interface, and unique tools found within the app. This project helped me reach personal development goals and expand my knowledge within app demonstration.  I was also able to work creatively, without any bounds or restrictions on design - a fun and exciting rarity.
